THE ARTIST: Smoker
ORIGIN OF THE WORK: U.S.A (Internet 2003)
The first smokers are found in pattern books and price lists around 1850.
Pipe smoking became popular at the beginning of the 19th century, and
Toy makers used this new "trend" to depict various people of village life.
The first models for smokers were the beloved members of the village,
whom you'd be most likely to see on the street: wood cutters, peddlers,
miners, mailmen, chimney sweeps and many others.
Early producers of smokers used a special type of dough to form faces and arms.
Today nearly all smokers are made solely of wood.
